Welcome

In 1811, the first Irish settlers to our area arrived in Norway, near Tignish. Over the next several years many more Irish immigrants arrived and settled here. Today, many of the area’s names can be traced back to these early settlers who arrived 200 years ago. This year’s festival is a special event as we celebrate the bicentennial of the Irish arrival to our area.

The Irish Heritage Festival of PEI is the new name for the Tignish Irish Folk Festival. Since its debut back in 1999, the festival has continued to grow and the new name reflects this growth. The festival has long ceased to be just about a concert and has for years encompassed a more robust sampling of our heritage. Since 2011 marks the arrival of the first Irish to the Tignish area, it was decided that this occasion should be used to launch the festivals new name.

The festival’s origin was a part of Tignish’s bicentennial and was seen as a way to promote the community and acknowledge its Irish heritage. The first festival was just an outdoor concert but over the years it continued to evolve. Now it contains a core group of annual events including the outdoor concert, a Common Ball Tournament, a golf tournament, an Irish breakfast, an Irish Pub and an Irish ceilidh. A new event or two is usually incorporated in to each year’s festival.
